It's 3:14am. Your baby is latched, your room is dark except for one glowing rectangle six inches from your face, and somewhere in the back of your head your grandmother's voice says something about ruining your eyes. You keep scrolling anyway. Everyone does.
Why your grandmother wasn't entirely wrong
"Don't read, don't cry, protect your eyes" is one of the oldest confinement rules in the book, usually filed under the same drawer as "no cold water" and "no hair washing." The traditional explanation involves wind entering the eyes and weakening them for life. Modern eye doctors don't talk about wind. But they will tell you that postpartum eyes genuinely are more fragile for a few weeks, for a reason that has nothing to do with air currents: your oestrogen level, which was sky-high for nine months, drops by more than 90 percent in the first few days after delivery. What a phone screen actually does to postpartum eyes
Here's the part nobody's great-aunt could have known: focused near-work, and a phone six inches from your face at 3am is about as near as it gets, cuts your blink rate roughly in half or more. A relaxed eye blinks 15 to 20 times a minute, spreading fresh tear film across the surface each time. Staring at a screen drops that to somewhere around 5 to 7. Fewer blinks means the tear film you already have less of, thanks to the oestrogen dip, evaporates faster than it's replaced. Add a dark room, which forces your pupils wider to let in more light, against a screen that's disproportionately bright compared to its surroundings, and you get the exact contrast ratio eye doctors point to when they explain digital eye strain. If your phone is out for even half of that, you're looking at 20 to 60 minutes of close, dim-lit screen time nightly, on top of whatever daytime scrolling happens between naps. Multiply across six weeks and it adds up to real, measurable strain: headaches behind the eyes, blurred focus when you look up, eyes that feel sandy by evening. None of this is dangerous. All of it is fixable.
The honest part: nobody's putting the phone down
Let's not pretend. The phone is how you tell your husband the baby finally slept. It's how you ask your mother-in-law a question you'd rather not say out loud in front of her. It's the only conversation with another adult some nights offer, and during a month when visitors are limited and sleep is fragmented, that thread of connection matters more than any eye-strain lecture. Telling a new mum to simply not use her phone during confinement is advice from someone who has never done a 3am feed alone in a dark room. The realistic goal isn't zero screen time. It's screen time that doesn't leave your eyes worse off by day 28.
What actually helps
- Turn on night mode or a warm filter so the screen isn't fighting the dark room at full brightness. Most phones have this built in under display settings.
- Hold it further than six inches. Even stretching to arm's length, propped on a pillow if your arm's already full of baby, cuts the strain noticeably.
- Blink on purpose every so often. Sounds silly, works. Three deliberate blinks every few minutes keeps the tear film moving.
- Keep a small bottle of preservative-free artificial tears by the bed. A drop before a night feed does more for gritty eyes than any amount of willpower.
- Look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds whenever you put the phone down, even if it's just the dark shape of the wardrobe. It resets the focusing muscle that's been locked at 6 inches.
